Skin care is not just about beautification and cosmetic enhancement. Taking care of your skin can improve your overall health and make you feel a lot better about yourself, no matter who you are. The skin is the body’s largest organ, and neglecting it can be downright dangerous. Here are a few quick tips to help you treat your skin better:
Do not shave your dry skin. Never shave without lubricant either. When you dry-shave, you will suffer razor burn, irritation and ingrown hairs. Once you have shaved, you should put lotion onto the shaved area. This will soothe irritation and provide much needed moisture to your skin.
One great way to refresh your skin, especially in the summer, is to use a cotton ball soaked in witch hazel. Witch hazel is a mild herbal-based toner, low in alcohol. It will deal with the oiliness that builds up on your face on a hot summer day, but not in a drying way, and will leave your face feeling cool and refreshed
You must always make sure that you remove your makeup before going to bed. Allowing makeup to remain on the skin overnight, allows dirt and impurities to remain trapped, plus, it can foster the development of acne and can cause your skin to look older than it actually is. Always be certain to use a gentle cleanser each night, in order to remove all traces of makeup, before you fall asleep.
Never sleep with makeup as this will ruin your skin. During this time is when the body and skin rejuvenate while repairing any damage that was done during the day. When makeup is not removed before retiring, you’re preventing the skin from healing and not giving it the oxygen it needs to breathe and repair itself. Simply spend a couple of minutes to take it off prior to going to sleep.
Use a humidifier in winter to avoid dry skin. When homes and offices have the furnaces going in the cold winter months, the air inside becomes very dry and can suck the moisture right out of your skin. To combat this, use a humidifier in your home when the heater is on to replace lost moisture in the air.
Apply your products to damp skin in order to maximize absorbency and effectiveness. When you just step out of the shower (or steam room), your skin is more absorbent and sponge-like than it is when it is dry. However, there is one exception. Do not apply sunscreen with a mineral-base to damp skin. You will get uneven coverage.
Do not mix different skin care products. Try to purchase skin care products made for your skin type from one specific product line of a brand. Mixing different products can create an allergic reaction for your skin. Always test everything before applying to your face and read the list of ingredients in each product.
Even a little bit of skin care can go a long way. When you pay a little bit of attention to your skin’s health, it will reward you many times over. Besides improving your overall health, taking care of your skin will keep you looking younger and healthier for years to come.
